The Good IV League On-Line:
The Archives

League Report 4.25                                               December 38, 1992

Yes, once again, I have repented at the last minute. I was so angry at finishing last for the second season in a row that I embezzled the league money, and I was about to get on a plane to Argentina when I overheard a radio report saying that the Red Sox had traded for Bruce Hurst. Then all the pleasant memories of baseball past came rushing back, and I decided to give out the prize money after all. You people are lucky I'm such a sentimentalist.

Actually, my other excuse for the annual delay in payoffs is to give myself (and the rest of you) something to look forward to after the holidays: not just money, but my yearly mid-winter Red Sox analysis!  (You can now find it in the halls of my Baseball Journal!)

Back to Fantasy. That's right, it's not too early, or too late, to start thinking all over again about our secret distraction from the local sports blues, the 1993 Good IV League season. The first big question to ask is how we all made out after the dust settled on all of the trades and free agent moves. I'm sure it's the foremost issue on all of your minds these days, but I'll offer a quick update anyway, in case you missed something:

Cities. Only lost 3B Jim Tatum in the expansion draft. Opportunities opening up for Sprague, Derek Bell, Tim Salmon, etc.

Mountain Men. Lost Bichette, Maldonado, Wilson, Tanana. Keeps Kevin Reimer, and I don't want to hear any arguments about it. Gallego and Stevens will lose playing time; Easley and Hatcher may have new opportunities.

Pets. Lost Charlie Hayes, Billy Ripken, Greg Hibbard. Keith Miller loses a position, but Chito Martinez may move in.

Skid Rowes. Lost Eric Wedge, Mel Hall. Most of the rest are still viable (some tough roster calls for Larry).

Kings. Lost Jose Guzman, Craig Lefferts(?). Pat Kelly has to compete with Spike Owen.

Egglegs. Lost Orsulak, Plantier. May benefit from Boggs's move to New York, Valentin's starting opportunity in Boston.

Jay Jays. Half their team was in its option year, anyway. No other major effects, except Duane Ward moves up to closer in Toronto, and Steve Howe is back. This team is overloaded with relievers.

Mud Hens. No significant losses. Bam Bam Meulens is never going to make it in the majors.

Eagles. Lost Lansford to retirement. Jeff Russell and Scott Sanderson are still question marks. Glenn Davis's competition has been removed in Baltimore.

Boomers. Lost Jody Reed, John Smiley, Dave Stieb, possibly Brunansky. I think Rene Gonzales may be out of a job in California, too.

Coming Soon. Sometime in February, maybe, I'd like to organize another pre-season meeting, with the possibility of clarifying/changing some rules again. Last year's turned out to be a good idea, and fun, and I think most of the major rules issues were smoothed out last season as a result. But there are probably others we'll want to address once we think about it. Please feel free to call or write regarding any specific proposals or concerns (keeping in mind that the statistical categories are frozen at least through 1993), and I'll try to make up an agenda. Among the potential controversies, I know, is "dumping," which sort of got out of hand after we removed obstacles to it last year. Anyway, give it some thought, and let's talk.
