Hi, again. I bet you didn't expect to get another report from me so soon. Well, I'm into baseball right now, and I don't have a ton of work to do, so you're the lucky ones.
Most of us have been keeping in touch via the new Web site, and have encountered many of its glitches, but the general consensus is that it's pretty amazing. And the early season results that finally arrived last week are surprising and confounding as well. First the Jay Jays were in the lead, then it switched to the Skid Rowes: deja vu, n'est-ce pas? Getting the standings updated every day is almost too much information, along with those daily team box scores. It's a whole new world.
Stuff. I've now managed to get the rosters pretty much up to date at All Star Stats. Let me know if there are any remaining mistakes or omissions. There is one rule modification that I have unilaterally introduced, after consultation with a few disgruntled owners. A number of times during the season, owners don't manage to get in touch with me until Monday morning, despite the Sunday 11:00 PM transaction deadline. In the past, I have always accepted such late submissions as long as there was a reasonable excuse, and I continue to do so, especially for replacement of DL players, since I don't like teams not having a full roster.
However, now that I am posting results of the bidding late Sunday night, it is not possible to allow late bids for players, and if you don't make the deadline, you won't be able to compete for your preferred choices. At the same time, this would give you a free ride at $5 for whatever player is left, and the consensus is that this could result (however unlikely) in a windfall cheap pickup, who might be worth keeping next year. This is especially a risk if you replace an player Monday morning who was injured Sunday night, but most people didn't know about it until the last minute. Anyway, the new ruling is to make the automatic bet for such "free" last-minute pickups $10 rather than $5. This will apply retroactively to Loretta, McCarthy, and the couple of guys picked up this week. In general, please try to get moves in by late Sunday; calling 477-9356 any time is all right.
The rest of this report was Real Baseball stuff, now transferred to the archives of the Baseball Journal.
