The Good IV League On-Line:
The Archives

League Report 9.04                                      September 11, 1997

Oh, those Skids!!

We of the Good IV League are in shock.  We have been awed into silence once again.  Our feelings are a mix of reverent respect, resentful jealousy, and utter amazement.  The juggernaut known as the Skid Rowes is doing it again.  Unless matters turn around suddenly and decisively, the Skids are on their way to their fourth League championship in 9 years. (Want the history? Check the Archives!)  They have gone from 5th place and 44.5 points on July 1, to a commanding lead in 1st place, at 61 points and still climbing.  Only the Boomers seem to be still in the fight, creating the prospect of a repeat of the exciting 1993 pennant race, which the Skids squeaked out, 63-62.

How have they done it?  How does this team always seem to pick up the right guys at the right time?  For example, the Cities had Jeff Frye for a couple of weeks; he had a .208 OBP with 9 TB.  Then Naehring gets injured, the Skids picked up Frye, he plays every day and gives them a .343 OBP and 101 TB.  The Cities also tried Allen Watson for a bit, long enough to run up a 7.71 ERA with no wins.  Since the Skids grabbed him, he's only chipped in 8 wins, enough to raise them 5 points in that category alone.  They pick up Bryce Florie, he gets a win.  Florie goes on the DL, they pick up Joel Adamson, he gets a win the next day.  They trade two closers and sign Karchner, he gets 12 straight saves.  Ask the Mud Hens what Karchner did when he was on their roster last year.

You know how scary this team is?  They're sitting on farm players Ben Grieve, who's tearing up the league, and Juan Encarnacion, who's got a regular job and 3 home runs already for Detroit, not to mention Todd Walker, and they've got no place to play them!  (Somebody's going to be available on waivers in another week.)  You know how it feels: they sign Grieve when no one's looking, I've got Michael (Prime Rib) Coleman.  My hat is off, but my eyes are rolling.

Speaking of Coleman.  I'm entertaining offers for the Next Duquette Outfield Stiff.  In the great tradition of Mark Whiten, Tuffy Rhodes, Lee Tinsley, Dwayne Hosey, and Rudy Pemberton (am I leaving someone out?), I'm already convinced after 2 weeks that this guy is a worthless hot dog.  Maybe you think otherwise; maybe Mo Vaughn will sit on him and make him pay attention long enough to put his natural skills to some use.  But I've been down that road way too many times, so I'll be happy to give you his future in exchange for some measly pitching or hitting.  Any takers?

****

That's it for now; I want to get this up and running without further delay.  Check back in on a regular basis, as I intend to add new tidbits whenever the spirit moves me.  This will also include updates on roster moves and rules, meetings and announcements, although some of those I'll continue to post at All Star Stats as well.  Enjoy the rest of the race, too!
